He could let Adam calling her "ab-normal" slide because, in the circles he frequented, it was a rare compliment.
Average was the word Sam preferred. That’s what most people were measuring when they said normal: the qualities of one thing against an average of the set. There was a middle point, or a middle range, and things fell on that point or within that range or they didn’t.
Delilah was, as he told Adam, above average more often than not, and his role for all the years he had known her had been to buffer the world to give her the space she needed to make it fit her right. It had mostly worked too, until The Cookie Incident sent them back to ground zero.

ReplyDeleteNext, they're going to cut and run before the cops show up. :) Next week will be six from the drive home.
DeleteNice introspection and explanation. It gives the reader a great visual and shows the characters' complicated relationship.
ReplyDeleteThanks Stephanie!
DeleteI'm now very intrigued by "The Cookie Incident". Very nice six. Like the deep POV, as well as the teaser at the end!
ReplyDeleteThe Cookie Incident :) How I'd love to just blurt that out. Thanks Amy.
DeleteSeems like this is Introspection Sunday. My piece is, yours is, the couple I've read so far are :)
ReplyDeleteGreat introspection-- I like the image you created by saying he was giving her space and protection for her to have a chance to let it fit her, and then closing with such a tease! Now I have to know what the Cookie Incident is!
Thanks Angela :)
DeleteIntriguing six and great reasoning by Sam.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Paula.
DeleteYou got me with the cookie incident :)

ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued by the Cookie incident and what it's about. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the mention. :)
Nice, Wendy. More and more intrigued. I was a little confused by the mention of Delilah (and in masculine), but I guess with these short snippets it's easy to miss context, right? Will be back next week for more!
ReplyDeleteI love Sam's insight here. His train of thought gives him great voice, and now I'm wondering what the Cookie Incident was all about. ;c) And also deeply flattered you mentioned me. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteShe's lucky to have such a great supporter. And, yes, gotta know about the Cookie Incident. (Also, thank you for mentioning me; you're so kind!)
ReplyDeleteWow. I thought The Cookie Incident might be catchy, but...wow!
ReplyDeleteI'm with the others... the cookie incident is definately intriguing. Cookies sounds so innocent, but when it sends them back to ground zero? Hmmm... :)
ReplyDeleteHehe. The cookie incident has drawn a lot of questions! I love Sam! Want more!! Great six Wendy!
ReplyDeleteCookies as in the kind you eat, or the kind that are left on you computer?
ReplyDeleteThe peanut butter variety :)
DeleteDue to the popularity of The Cookie Incident, Sam will be explaining it in my next six. (It comes at the end of the first chapter, so it's not really a spoiler. :)
ReplyDeleteI was just about to say - what was the Cookie incident?! :-P
